It's suggested that the blue light your phone emits could potentially harm your eyes. As a result, many companies, like Samsung, have worked to find ways to reduce the blue light your eyes are exposed to. For Samsung, the result of those efforts is the Eye Comfort Shield feature. Here's how to use it.
Eye Comfort Shield used to be part of Samsung's Night Mode features. Newer Galaxy devices do not have Night Mode, instead folding all display options, including Dark Mode, into the Display settings.
Samsung's Eye Comfort Shield is designed to help filter out blue light that can harm your eyes. That means your Galaxy display might appear warmer or more yellow when the feature is turned on. This results from the reduction in blue light (which appears brighter and more white).
You can access Eye Comfort Shiled in Samsung's Settings app. Here's how to turn the feature on or off.
Open Settings > Display.
Tap the toggle to the right of Eye comfort shield to turn it on or off.
If the feature is turned off the toggle button will be gray.
You'll likely immediately notice a difference in the color of your Galaxy screen. To control how your screen appears while Eye Comfort Shield is active, tap the words Eyey comfort shield to open the settings.
There, you can change it from Adaptive, which automatically adjusts your screen, to Custom, which lets you set your preferred light color (also called temperature).
The Enhanced comfort option will adjust color tones and contrast at night, making the light from your device less disruptive when you're viewing it after dark.
In older versions of Samsung Galaxy Devices, Eye Comfort Shield was known or and/or part of Night Mode. Newer Samsung Galaxy phones don't have a night mode. They do, however, have a Dark Mode.
Dark Mode is different from Night Mode, though they both helped to reduce eye strain when using your Galaxy phone at night. Dark Mode is a dark theme that can be applied universally across all the apps and services on your phone. You can even set a schedule for when you want Dark Mode to turn on and off.
Open Settings > Display.
Tap the toggle below Dark to turn on Dark Mode.
To adjust your schedule for Dark Mode, tap Dark mode settings and then toggle on Turn on as scheduled.
On the page that opens, toggle on Turn on as scheduled and then choose Sunset to sunrise or Custom schedule. If you choose Custom schedule, you'll be able to determine the hours you want Dark Mode to be in effect.
Dark mode changes your phone's user interface elements to their inverse colors—white becomes black, etc. This utilizes Android night mode originally introduced in Android Pie. It can make your phone less bright during the night and easier to read. However, night mode does not work across all apps.
Eye Comfort Shield affects the screen's output. Its benefit is that it works universally because it doesn't rely on apps that follow guidelines. It just reduces blue light output regardless of what is on your screen.
Both modes may help with eye strain and light sensitivity during dark hours.
